About the Faculty
General Overview
Inspiring Innovation in Architecture, Planning, and Environmental Development
The Faculty began under the Faculty of Engineering when Architecture was established there a project in 1970. Autonomous operations began in 1973/74 when the Faculty of Environmental Design was established with Architecture as the only Departments. By 1980 two other Departments were added-Building Technology and City and Country Planning. In the same year the Architecture program was restructured-into a continuous 6 year program replacing the BES/MED program. Thus the Faculty became a professional Faculty where all three programs provided not only basic academic qualifications but also entitled the graduate to apply for registration with their respective regulatory professional bodies. Architecture on its part, as a 6 year program now offered a 4-year training topped up with a two year professional qualification. (BES/B.Arch).
In 1986, the University embarked on a rationalization process which brought Estate Management into the Faculty along with Geography and Planning which replaced City and Regional Planning.
The Faculty name, in line with this new composition, was changed to Faculty of Environmental Sciences. The Department of Quantity Surveying was later added in 2003 making the Faculty a 5-Department Faculty focused on Built Environment disciplines.
The development is the transformation of Architecture Department into a Faculty in line with the requirements of the National Universities Commission. This is expected to take effect by the new academic session 2025/26.
