Welcome to Department of Building

You are heartily welcome to the page of the Department of Building of the University of Lagos. The Department of Building trains intending professionals for the national and international market including the world of research and innovation. While the current name of the Department is Building, its focus remains the education and training of intending professionals for the construction, maintenance, and deconstruction of buildings and the attendant management of resources and technology for building project delivery.

Our graduates are making impact in several parts of the globe. Our student experience is rich. We teach our students the use of both brain to solve societal problems and promote innovation. Our teaching faculty is top notch. While Building is the present name the department bears in the context of the law establishing the profession of Building in Nigeria, the department retains its focus and uniqueness in the education and training of human assets for the national and international built environment. Building in Nigeria has near or total equivalence to some programmes in several parts of the world bearing such names as construction management, construction project management, construction engineering and management among others.

The Department has accreditation from the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) and the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON). We have international linkages for research too. About Building Department

The thinking underlying training in Building programme is to develop and advance the science, technology, practices and management of construction, operation, maintenance and deconstruction of buildings. The programme exposes students to cutting edge skills in building assembly/construction techniques, building construction and maintenance processes such as site management, financial management, building production and maintenance management, building structures, building development and redevelopment, materials production and usage. The graduates of the programme are expected to play a leading role in solving national problems and advancing Nigeria technologically through innovations in building techniques, processes and management. In essence, the building graduate will, among other things, receive training in the science and technology of building, as well as in creative and knowledgeable approach to the managerial functions needed to define, assemble, coordinate and control the technological, economic, human and material resources involved in building production, maintenance and deconstruction processes.

The Building programme requires diverse skills and is concerned with the provision and analysis of information for a variety of decision-making and resource allocation purposes relating to the built environment and improvements of it. It involves courses in building assembly/construction techniques, construction building process in the areas of management, contract management, financial management, building development, redevelopment and maintenance as well as the solution of related multifaceted problems.

Objectives
The specific objectives of the programme are to:
1. produce graduates with competence in the science, technology and management of building production, maintenance, deconstruction and with generalized knowledge of information and computer technology (ICT) as well as other allied professions to be able to relate effectively well in the building delivery process and integrate and translate disparate inputs of other construction industry professionals to the actual production of the building;
2. enable the student develop his/her intellectual, analytical and critical abilities in order to control the technological, economic, human and material resources involved in the building production, maintenance and deconstruction process;
3. equip the students with the ability to locate, extract and analyse, translate, integrate and use data from multiple sources such as drawings and other contract documents including
capacity to comprehend the environmental, social, economic and technological contexts underlying design and construction in the built environment;
4. produce value-driven and entrepreneurially sound graduates who are both technically competent and socially responsible to the society for the safety of men and structures both at the construction stages and during the eventual use of the building through emphasis on health and safety, quality management and economy in the process and methodology of building production;
5. produce graduates who will acquire skills and consequently render specialized services in any or some of the focal areas of the building profession such as building production management, maintenance management, condition survey, construction planning, construction methodology, project health and safety, and project quality management; and
6. to produce graduates who can advance postgraduate research in all aspects of building which include construction management, building maintenance management, building structures, construction technology and building services.

Employability skills
The new curriculum when applied effectively will equip Building graduates with necessary skills to work in public and private sectors of the contemporary digital world (nationally and internationally) in an innovative manner.
When the graduates become professionally licensed, they are recognized by Nigerian law as Builders employable in Public Sector Organizations as Construction/Building Production Managers, Construction Technology Expert/Adviser, Project Managers, Project Builder, Client’s Representative, Maintenance Officer/Manager, Construction Planning Manager, Building Project Health and Safety Manager. The graduate/builder can also work in any of client, consulting or contracting organizations.
The registered builder can also establish his own organization for contracting or consulting purposes and in the process promote entrepreneurship. Other areas of employability or entrepreneurship include materials research, development and marketing. There are many more. The building graduate and registered builder has employability opportunities at all stages right from the design, planning, preconstruction stages, to the construction and post construction stages and in essence throughout the useful life of the building and can add unprecedented values in organizations in the project value chain.

Biography of the Department

 The Building programme was established in the 1980/81 academic session as the Department of Building Engineering within the Faculty of Environmental Design. It was relocated to the Faculty of Engineering in the 1984/85 academic session but was subsequently moved back to the Faculty of Environmental Sciences (now its present location) in the 1988/89 session following a directive from the National Universities Commission (NUC).The first cohort of Building students graduated in 1987 from the six-year programme of B.E.S., B.B,TECH offered by the then Department of Building Engineering. Over the past four decades, this department has played a pivotal role in producing and nurturing exceptional graduates and faculty members.The first batch of M.Sc Construction Management students graduated in 1985, while the first Ph.D. students finished in 1991. Through their expertise and competence in the core Building curriculum, these individuals have made notable contributions to their respective fields. They have excelled in various capacities, distinguishing themselves in leadership positions within the construction industry and academia, both nationally and internationally.

Currently, the Department offers full-time Masters degree programmes in Construction Management and Construction Technology, as well as a part-time Master of Project Management. Additionally, MPhil and doctorate degree programmes in Building are available. As of the 2024/2025 academic session, the Department has achieved a remarkable track record, having produced over 1500 M.Sc graduates, more than 700 Project Managers, and over 25 doctorate degree holders over the past four decades. To ensure that our students are future-ready, the Department collaborates with domestic and international industry partners and alumni.

The Department’s strategic location in Lagos, a mega-city, provides an exceptional training ground for handling complex construction scenarios. As a hub of construction activities, Lagos offers our students unique opportunities to network with industry professionals. Our programmes are designed to align with global best practices emphasising innovatoion and sustainabilty. With our students and faculty, we involve in co-creation of viable ideas and projects. The department pioneered the Masters of Project Management programme in the 2001/2002 academic session, the first such in any Nigerian university. It is to the credit of the department that beyond the production of high calibre construction industry manpower, the department revolutionised built environment education and training in producing manpower for teaching and research in several Nigerian institutions and beyond. In essence, while the department has made giant strides in capacity building, it is not resting on its oars, it envisions many national and international linkages for symbiotic and maximum impact on at national and global levels
