Prof. (Mrs.) I.I.C. Nwokoro

Personal Statement

Immaculata Nwokoro, Professor of Urban and Regional Planning and former Director, Centre for General Studies at the University of Lagos obtained her doctorate degree from the prestigious University of Ibadan, and was the first PhD graduate of the Department, having previously bagged a degree in Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) from the same institution. She went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Geo-informatics from the University of Lagos. She is a first-class honors’ Bachelor of Technology graduate of Urban and Regional Planning from Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt.

Her concerns for the state of the environment and its effect on the health of people informed her choice of career ambition. Each of Nwokoro’s degrees has been complemented with several laurels as a testament to her scholarly aptitude. Her Teaching and Research experience spans over 22 years at the University of Lagos/ Her specialisation is in the area of Environmental Health and Planning, especially in Low Income Communities, and Gender Issues She has contributed immensely to university administration through offices held as Head of Department, Member of University Senate, Chairman of Departmental Postgraduate Board, Chairman and member of various university statutory committees, Deputy Director, Quality Assurance and SERVICOM Unit and currently, Director of Centre for General Studies.

Nwokoro is external examiner/ assessor to several institutions, as well as a Registered Town Planner (RTP) and Member, Association of African Planning Schools, South Africa, Corporate Member, Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (MNITP) and, The International Society for Urban Health (ISUH) among several others. Prof Nwokoro’s notable international academic engagements include a 2-month study visit to the Department of Geography, Lancaster University, United Kingdom, Visiting Scholar at the African Population and Health Research Centre, Nairobi, Kenya in 2013, Guest Lecturer at the City Forum Series, Community and Regional Planning Programme, University of Texas in Austin, USA, in 2013 and was variously a Discussant at the 13th International Conference on Urban Health, San Francisco, California , USA in April, 2016 and the Urban Thinkers Campus, Health and Well Being organized by the United Nations – International Institute for Global Health (UNU- IIGH) held in Kuching, Malaysia in January 2016, among several other urban health related meetings and workshops.
