Prof. ODUWAYE, Adeleke Obafemi
Personal Statement
Tpl. (Prof.) ’Leke Oduwaye is a Town Planner, an Architect, several times Head of Department of Urban and Regional Planning and former Dean, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, University of Lagos.
He attended Remo Secondary School for his secondary school education and later proceeded to Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt where he obtained a Diploma in Architecture at Upper Credit level and subsequently passed the professional examinations of the Nigerian Institute of Architects and the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria through which he got registered as an Architect. He later attended Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife where he obtained Bachelor of Science degree in Urban and Regional Planning at Second Class Upper Division. He also attended the University of Ibadan, Ibadan where he obtained a Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree. Professor Oduwaye returned to the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife where he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Urban and Regional Planning in 2003.
Before joining academics he had relevant professional experience in architecture and urban planning practice during which he worked with
frontline consultancy firms of Darchi-Workgroup (Architects & Planners) and Molaj Consultants (Chattered Town Planners).
He started his academic career with the Department of Geography and Planning, Lagos State University Ojo in 1991. He later joined the University of Lagos in 1998 where he was appointed a Professor in 2010. Professor Oduwaye was a Visiting Professor at the following universities at different periods: Bells University of Technology, Ota, Lagos State University, Ojo and Covenant University, Ota. He was also appointed a Professor at Bayero University, Kano and Osun State University, Osogbo.
He has made significant contribution to the theoretical and empirical understanding of the dynamics of urban land use planning. He has published and presented papers widely in the area of urban land use planning, spatial structure of urban system, urban land values, city branding, co-production in planning, climate change, green development and sustainable development.
Prof. Oduwaye has published over 130 articles in reputable journals, conference proceedings and workshops in which he addressed urban planning issues at both local and international outlets and which included presentation
at the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Association of Town Planning Consultants and government agencies conferences and workshops
t the University of Lagos he was instrumental to the approval and take-off of the post-graduate programmes at the M.Sc, MURP, M.Phil and Ph.D levels in Urban and Regional Planning. The Department also obtained the first full accreditation by both the National Universities Commission and the Town Planners Registration Council during the period he was the Head of Department.
Prof. Oduwaye secured many research and conference grants which has taken him to the following countries among others: United Kingdom, Thailand, United States, France, Estonia, Spain, Ghana, Italy, France, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia among others sponsored by the University of Lagos, UN-Habitat, Africa Urban Research Initiatives, Cities Alliance, Rockefeller among others.
Prof. Oduwaye has served as Chairman/member of accreditation panels to many universities and also as external examiner/assessor to over 20 local and foreign universities which included University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Lagos State
University; Bells University of Technology, Ota; University of Jos, Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso; Osun State University, Osogbo; Kwame Nkurumah University, Kumasi, Ghana; Federal University of Technology Akure, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye among others.
He is also on the Editorial Board of many journals which includes Lagos Journal of Environmental Studies and Urban and Regional Planning Review.
Prof. Oduwaye was the Chairman of the Nigeria Institute of Town Planners Strategic Development Plan Committee published in 2024. He has also served as member of the NITP Education and Practice Committees.
Tpl. (Prof.) Oduwaye planning projects experience portfolio include the Review of the Lagos State Regional Master Plan, Abeokuta City Center Master Plan, National Memorial Park Abuja, Bwari Master Plan Abuja, Ikorodu Regional Master Plan, Exxon Mobil Residential Estate Lekki, Medical Warehouse, a project of the Federal Ministry of Health in Lagos, several Environmental Impact Analysis Reports and the preparation of the World Bank/IFPRL report on Improving Land Sector Government in Nigeria. He was one of the urban experts
that worked for the UN-Habitat on Urban Ecology and Resilience in preparation for Habitat III, Quito.
He belongs to many professional bodies and societies which include the following: Fellow Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria, Nigeria Institute of Architects, Architects Registration Council of Nigeria, Royal Town Planning Institute (International Associate), International Society of City and Regional Planning, the Netherlands, Urban Research Network, New York and Nigeria Institute of Management.
In recognition of his contributions to academic and development of the planning profession he has been honored with the following awards among others: Distinguished Leadership Award, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Lagos, Deserving Alumni’s Award, Faculty of Environmental Design and Management, Obafemi Awolowo University. Ile-Ife Distinguished Alumnus Award, Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife and Distinguished Researcher Award, Faculty of Environmental Sciences University of Lagos Professor Oduwaye is married and blessed with children.
